Self Care Tips

In the last few years, my self care routine has become increasingly important to me. I have had to learn to love myself after being diagnosed with mental health issues. I recently started to learn to take time out for myself. It can be difficult to listen to your own body, but, it is all a learning experience. Realising, that you feel exhausted, stressed, emotionally drained, uninspired and being continually unwell, makes a person think about the way they live their life. A self care routine can be 5 minutes in the morning or taking the whole full day.

Below, are a few of my personal favourite self care tips:

Sleep
This is number one priority for me and should be for everyone. I used to have difficult sleeping throughout the night. I would get about 8 hours of sleep in 7 days. This was due to the effects of my mental health issues. This resulted in me being stressed, always feeling tired and mentally and physically drained. I had tried many different techniques to help get to sleep and stay asleep for at least 8 hours a night. The biggest thing that I have learnt is to avoid all technology about 15- 30 minutes before going to bed. Having a dark and quiet room, also, helps sleep. I like to read a book and have a cup of hot chocolate. This helps me relax.
If you are tired during the day, there is nothing better than having a nap. It helps you feel refreshed and ready for the rest of day.

Pamper Session
After either a busy and stressful week in work or a hard workout, I like to have a pamper session. Usually, at the end of a busy week, I feel emotionally drained and tired. I will refresh my body with a facial at home. Currently, I am obsessed with products from the Body Shop. I love their Coconut Pre-Shampoo and Tea Tree Clay Face Mask. Sometimes, if I do not have much time I will just use the pre-shampoo on my hair, to fresher it up. This product is amazing for people with blonde, as it helps brighter the hair.
Also, I love having a long, hot shower after a hard workout. I will use Fit kit Muscle Cooling Body wash and Aveeno Body wash. After my shower, I will moisture my skin with Aveeno moisture cream and Body Shop Amazonian Saviour.

Exercise
To me, this is the most important self care tip. It can be a short walk to a long run or even going to the gym. Exercise has been known to improve a persons’ mental health and functionality. Just being with yourself and some music doing a workout, helps the clear the mind of any stress. It the feeling after a good workout, that I love.
I try to do different forms of exercise such as going to the gym, taking a walk or going for a run. I love trying new exciting fitness class such as Les Mills, etc.

Eating healthy
I always feel better in myself if I eat healthy. I have notice this affects my mental health. When I eat unhealthy, I am usually feel tired and lacking in energy. In the last few years, I have been trying to be more healthier. I have been eating more fruit and vegetables and less junk/ processed food.

  1. Driving through the mountains and finding a nice, secluded and quiet area helps me. Knowing that it is just me, in this present moment, helps all the more. Good post!
